Tubs and combination tub/shower units are usually set in place before any DWV connections are roughed-in. Its easier to verify the exact location of the drain opening this way, especially because manufacturers specifications often differ from the drain openings actual location on individual units. But before you set the unit, cut a 12-in. by 12-in. cutout in the sub-floor, centered underneath the tubs approximate drain location, to leave plenty of room for the waste and overflow (W&O) tee and tailpiece. After the tub is in place, the tub W&O fitting can be assembled, installed, and connected to the P-trap and DWV system. If the tub will be set on a slab, there should be a tub box, or opening in the slab, with a P-trap and drain already waiting to be connected to the tailpiece of the W&O fitting. In this case, the W&O will already be installed before the tub is set in place, though making the final connection will be a little tricky.
Leaking tub & shower faucets can waste hundreds of gallons of water down the drain every year. In todays environmental consciousness, this is an unacceptable waste of resources that can be easily fixed. Many people delay fixing their faucets because it seems too hard or intimidating. Fortunately, as this article shows, it is not that hard to fix leaky faucets with a few basic hand tools.
Showers, tubs and faucets are fairly simple construction, so there are only a certain number of possibilities for where the problem could be. Once youve eliminated the possibility that your shower or tub "leak" is simply your kids getting a little too enthusiastic while splashing around during bath time, youll need to methodically work your way through the possibilities until you find the leak.
